UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup: Puck Pieterse's Epic Win in Maasmechelen (2026)

UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup Maasmechelen: Puck Pieterse claims the first World-Cup victory of the season, leaving Lucinda Brand in the dust.

Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Premier Tech) emerged victorious in a thrilling UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup race in Maasmechelen, holding off fierce competition to cross the finish line solo after six intense laps. Her Dutch teammate, Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado, finished a mere 10 seconds behind, showcasing her own impressive speed. Amandine Fouquenet (Pauwels Sauzen-Altez Industriebouw) secured third place, despite an untimely bike change that momentarily setback her performance.

Pieterse's winning strategy was a calculated move. She noticed Fouquenet's puncture and anticipated a quick return to the pit zone, allowing her to pass and make her move. As she explained, "Once I saw it, I directly passed her and made my attack. That's racing, unfortunately, but she was super strong again, especially on this technical track."

The race began with Pieterse latching onto the high pace set by Fouquenet and her teammate Leonie Bentveld. The Pauwels Sauzen duo immediately applied pressure in the dry, sunny conditions. Brand's race took a turn for the worse after a crash in the sand on lap two, which disrupted her rhythm. Pieterse and Fouquenet quickly established themselves as the top contenders.

Despite the ebb and flow of the race, Pieterse maintained her lead throughout the 47.5-minute race. Fouquenet's puncture unfortunately ended her chances, but her ability to close the gap after changing bikes is a promising sign for the upcoming World Championships.

Alvarado acknowledged that she could have caught up, but the threat of Fouquenet deterred her. This performance, however, indicates her rising form ahead of the season's climax in Hulst next weekend. With Brand's low finish, the race for the rainbow jersey is wide open, setting the stage for another thrilling competition.
