Imagine the excitement: a world champion almost gracing the Tour Down Under! The cycling season has officially revved up, with thrilling races already unfolding across the globe. Down Under, the Tour Down Under was on the cusp of a truly electrifying start, as the reigning world champion, Tadej Pogačar, was reportedly close to kicking off his season there.
As the very first WorldTour race of the year, the Tour Down Under already draws an impressive lineup of talent. However, Pogačar’s presence would have undoubtedly elevated the event to an entirely new stratosphere of prestige and fan engagement. Race director Stuart O’Grady revealed that the Slovenian star’s participation was remarkably close to becoming a reality. In fact, O’Grady shared his enthusiasm, stating that Pogačar was "pretty excited about coming down."
This tantalizing prospect of Pogačar in Australia came to light when Alex Carera, a prominent agent representing top riders like Jasper Philipsen and Biniam Girmay, paid a visit to the Tour Down Under. During his visit, Pogačar's potential participation was a hot topic of discussion, and O’Grady expressed his belief that the champion’s interest was indeed genuine.
But here's where it gets fascinating: O’Grady admitted he hadn't anticipated such strong interest, but he viewed it as a very positive indicator for the race's future appeal. He mused that perhaps the focus on a fifth Tour de France title in 2026 might influence Pogačar’s team to maintain a similar program. "After he has that hopeful fifth Tour, we'll do everything in our power to get him down to Adelaide," O'Grady stated, hinting at future possibilities.
The race director also emphasized how challenging it can be to truly grasp the allure of the Tour Down Under until one has experienced it firsthand. He shared a quote from cyclist Michael Kwiatkowski, who recently told him, "Why didn’t I come here ten years ago? It’s just such a perfect training platform." This highlights how the race offers more than just competition; it's a valuable training ground.
While the Tour Down Under might not be the absolute ideal preparation for Pogačar’s ultimate goal – the Tour de France – O’Grady reiterated the significant enthusiasm the Slovenian rider had for the idea. He mentioned speaking with Mauro Gianetti, the UAE team boss, in Geneva just last month, and that "they almost sent him here."
And this is the part most people miss: O’Grady also pointed out that Pogačar and his team are likely to stick to a familiar race calendar to support his ambition of winning a fifth Tour de France title in 2026. However, if the stars align in upcoming seasons, the organizers are already making plans to welcome him to Adelaide.
Should Pogačar indeed compete in 2027, it would mark his return to the Australian stage race after an eight-year hiatus. His previous appearance was in 2019, where he secured thirteenth place in the general classification and fourth place in the youth classification. Later that same year, he achieved a major breakthrough, clinching three stages in the Tour of Spain.
Regardless of his participation Down Under, Pogačar typically inaugurates his season with a series of races. In recent years, including 2022 and 2021, he has commenced his year at the UAE Tour. The year before that, he made his debut in the challenging Strade Bianche. This year, he is set to continue this tradition, making his first appearance in Tuscany on March 7th.
Tadej Pogačar's typical 2026 program often includes:
* Strade Bianche
* Milan-Sanremo
* Tour of Flanders
* Paris-Roubaix
* Liège-Bastogne-Liège
* Tour of Romandie
* Tour of Switzerland
* Tour de France
It's truly a shame Pogačar didn't make it this year, isn't it? Do you think the Tour Down Under is a viable season-opener for major Grand Tour contenders, or is it better suited as a stepping stone for other riders? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
