The comic's value is not just about its rarity; it's also about its history. Graded at a near-perfect 9 out of 10 by the Certified Guaranty Company, this copy is one of the highest-scoring Action Comics No. 1s to date. And its association with Hollywood star Nicolas Cage further adds to its allure.
Cage purchased this copy in 1996 for $150,000, a record at the time. But the theft in 2000 and its subsequent recovery in 2011 from a storage unit in California only added to its legend. Stephen Fishler, CEO of Metropolis/ComicConnect, likened the comic's journey to the theft of the Mona Lisa, which transformed it into the world's most famous painting.
"The recovery of the painting made the Mona Lisa an icon, and that's what Action No. 1 is - an icon of American pop culture," Fishler said. And this is the part most people miss: the theft and recovery of this comic book have contributed to its legendary status, making it even more valuable.
