Seattle's Big Decision: Celebrate or School? The City Chooses Both, But at What Cost to Students?
Seattle is gearing up for an epic celebration honoring the Seahawks' triumphant Super Bowl LX victory! The city has planned a spectacular trophy presentation at Lumen Field starting at 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday, followed by a jubilant parade down 4th Avenue in the heart of downtown at 11 a.m. PT. It's a moment of immense pride for the city, and everyone is invited to join the festivities!
But here's where it gets a bit tricky for the younger residents. The Seattle Public Schools District has made a significant announcement: schools will remain open on this celebratory Wednesday. This means that any student choosing to skip class to attend the parade will be marked with an "unexcused absence." The district's chief operating officer, Fred Podesta, emphasized the importance of maintaining "stability, safety, and continuity" for students by keeping the educational environment as normal as possible.
This approach is quite a departure from what we've seen in other major cities. Remember last year when schools in and around Philadelphia closed their doors for the Eagles' parade? Or even two years ago when the Kansas City area did the same for the Chiefs' celebration? Seattle is charting a different course.
Mayor Katie B. Wilson has enthusiastically encouraged "everyone to come out and join the celebration — responsibly, together, and with pride." It's a call to unity and shared joy.
