In a bold move, the Albanese government is proposing a scheme called Solar Sharer, set to launch in July. This initiative aims to harness the excess solar energy generated during the day and distribute it for free to participating households.
The Solar Sharer Scheme: A Game-Changer?
The government's analysis predicts significant savings for families, especially those with multiple appliances. By scheduling their dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, or even hot water heating to run during the free power window, a family of five could save anywhere from $550 to $790 annually.
But here's where it gets controversial: power companies are raising concerns. They argue that the benefits will primarily go to those with batteries and electric cars, leaving others out in the cold.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen, however, sees it differently. He believes the scheme will benefit a wide range of people, including those who work from home, stay-at-home parents, retirees, and students.
Shifting Energy Usage: A Win-Win?
The government's strategy is clear: shift household energy usage to the middle of the day to utilize the excess solar power and reduce costly evening peak usage. By moving 10% of energy use from the evening to the free window, a one-person household could save around $150 annually, and a five-person home could save up to $400.
And this is the part most people miss: by optimizing your energy usage, you can save even more. Switching 25-30% of your energy consumption to the free window could lead to savings of $400 for a one-person house and up to $1100 for a five-person household.
The Bigger Picture: A National Effort
The Solar Sharer scheme is set to launch in NSW, South Australia, and southeast Queensland initially, with the federal government working towards extending it to other states by 2027. Victoria is already consulting industry to introduce a similar initiative.
