In the bustling SE Asia Region, approximately 37 million children receive at least ten vaccines annually, and about 40 million pregnant women are vaccinated against tetanus. This massive immunization effort generates an astonishing 100 million liters of waste each year! And here's the twist: 80% of these immunization sessions are conducted as outreach, making effective waste management a herculean task.
With the introduction of new vaccines and increasing coverage, the volume and complexity of immunization waste have skyrocketed. This is where our story's heroes step in - a dedicated group of experts, professionals, and thought leaders from WHO and UNICEF across South-Asia, South-East Asia, and the East Asia Pacific Region.
Over two days, from 8-9 December 2025, they collaborated in a consultation meeting to develop practical guidelines for Immunization Waste Management (IWM). This meeting, organized jointly by the WHO Regional offices for South-East Asia (SEARO), South Asia (ROSA), and the East Asia Pacific Region (EAPRO), was a response to the urgent need for greener and more sustainable waste management methods, in line with global conventions.
The theme of the consultation, "Protect Health, Preserve Earth: Manage Immunization Waste Responsibly!", encapsulates the spirit of this initiative. The attendees included subject matter experts and program specialists from various levels of WHO and UNICEF, as well as delegates from country offices across the region. Their collective expertise was instrumental in crafting user-friendly and practical guidelines for IWM.
The proposed Regional Practical Guide on Immunization Waste Management is set to become an invaluable resource for policymakers, program managers, and frontline immunization workers across South-East Asia.
