Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba's public health officer, revealed that over 30 measles cases and counting have been associated with the Manitoba Ag Days event, a popular gathering that attracts thousands annually. This surge in cases has led to a critical decision: extending vaccine access to infants aged six months and above in the Prairie Mountain Health region.
But here's where it gets controversial: while the province is taking steps to control the outbreak, Manitoba has no plans to make measles vaccination mandatory. Dr. Roussin emphasizes that they will focus on education, accessibility, and building trust with healthcare workers and residents in high-risk areas.
The measles outbreak is particularly concerning due to the high transmission rates in southern Manitoba, where immunization coverage is lower than in urban areas. The province recorded a staggering 74 cases last month, the highest in a year. And the situation is further complicated by a severe influenza season, with over 3,000 cases straining hospital resources.
Dr. Roussin urges residents to get vaccinated against both measles and influenza, as a second wave of flu is anticipated in the spring. Manitoba currently leads the country in measles cases, accounting for over half of Canada's total reported cases as of late January.
