Lindsey Vonn's Olympic Dreams Hangs in the Balance After Crashing in the Final Downhill
The American skiing icon Lindsey Vonn's journey to the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics took a dramatic turn on Friday. In a race that promised to be a showcase of her prowess, Vonn's final downhill run ended in a crash, raising concerns about her participation in the upcoming Games.
The incident unfolded in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, where Vonn, a 41-year-old veteran, lost control after landing a jump on the upper section of the course. The steady snowfall and deteriorating visibility contributed to her loss of balance, causing her to skid sideways into the safety netting. Her airbag deployed, and she lay on the piste for several moments while medical staff assessed her condition.
Despite her determination, Vonn gingerly stood and skied away, repeatedly taking weight off her left leg and using her poles for support. Her knee, a source of concern, prompted her to stop several times during the descent. At the finish area, she was greeted by her teammate, Jacqueline Wiles, with whom she shared a long embrace. Vonn then limped into a medical tent for further evaluation.
The race organizers, prioritizing safety, canceled the downhill shortly after Vonn's crash. The challenging conditions had already claimed three victims among the first six skiers, including Austria's Nina Ortlieb, who crashed in the same upper section as Vonn but managed to ski away. Norway's Marte Monsen, on the other hand, suffered facial injuries after hitting the nets near the bottom of the course and was taken away on a stretcher.
One of the few skiers to complete her run, Romane Miradoli of France, described the visibility issues, stating, 'You can’t see, and it’s bumpy everywhere.' When asked about the dangers, she added, 'We just couldn’t see well.'
Vonn's crash is a stark reminder of her career's tumultuous history with injuries. In 2013, she tore the ligaments in her right knee during a high-speed crash at the world championships and was airlifted from the course. The following season, she suffered further damage, leading to her absence from the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Her career has also been marred by broken arms and legs, as well as a concussion.
Despite these setbacks, Vonn remains a legend in the skiing world. She won Olympic downhill gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games, eight years after her Olympic debut as a teenager in Salt Lake City. Vonn is scheduled to compete in the women’s downhill on February 8 and is also entered in the super-G and the new team combined event. Any injury at this stage would be a significant concern for the US team and Olympic organizers, who have positioned Vonn as a standout star of the Games. A US Ski and Snowboard spokesperson confirmed that Vonn is undergoing evaluation following the fall.
Vonn's outstanding form this season has been remarkable, with five podium finishes from five races, including two victories, and she leads the World Cup downhill standings. Her return to the top of the sport, following a partial knee replacement on her right leg less than two years ago, has been nothing short of extraordinary. She made a comeback last season after nearly six years away from competition and has described her physical condition as the best it has been in years.
