The political landscape in Pakistan is currently facing a significant hurdle: the federal government has extended its ban on meetings with the imprisoned former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, until February 8, 2026. This decision, announced by Federal Minister Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, underscores the ongoing tensions and restrictions surrounding Khan's detention.
According to reports, this prohibition was confirmed during a television appearance, solidifying a policy that was initially put in place earlier this month. Authorities have cited violations of prison rules by Khan's sisters as justification for the restrictions. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar explained that prison regulations forbid political discussions with inmates, which has led to the blocking of meetings between Khan, his sisters, and other PTI leaders.
Khan has been behind bars for over two years, since his detention in August 2023. He faces numerous charges, ranging from corruption to terrorism, following his removal from office in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote.
But here's where it gets controversial... PTI Senator Barrister Ali Zafar has challenged the legality of Khan's detention conditions, arguing that both international and Pakistani law prohibit solitary confinement.
Adding to the concerns, Khan's sons have voiced worries about their father's treatment. In an interview, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan described extended communication blackouts and alleged that court-approved contact permissions were not being honored. Kasim stated, "They [jail authorities] are not even allowing guards to speak to him [Imran Khan] because they want total isolation from any other person just to try and break him."
In other political developments, the federal minister addressed speculation about the potential removal of PTI-backed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, dismissing the rumors and stating that the Centre prefers Afridi to continue his duties.
Prime Minister's Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah countered PTI's claims of being politically marginalized. He argued that the party is unwilling to pursue available options, accusing them of favoring rebellion over dialogue.
Sanaullah also questioned the delays in the May 9 case verdicts, asking, "If the decision on the May 9 cases will not be made even in 2025, then when will it be?" His comments followed a special court's decision to sentence Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years each in the Toshakhana-2 case.
And this is the part most people miss... Sanaullah warned of legal consequences for lawbreaking, stating, "A group [PTI] is bent upon spreading chaos, anarchy and sedition." Addressing PTI's planned Islamabad march, he questioned its purpose, asking, "Is the conquest of Islamabad in the interest of the country and the nation?" He firmly stated that authorities would not permit any group to occupy the capital.
