Google is shaking things up in the news game, and it's using AI to do it. But is this a step forward, or a potential pitfall? Google Discover, a news hub for millions, is experimenting with AI-generated headlines, and the results are, well, mixed.
The Verge reported on a new test where AI rewrites headlines from various publications. In this trial, some users are seeing AI-crafted headlines without the original titles until they click through. These AI-generated headlines often condense the description to just four words.
But here's where it gets controversial: some of these AI rewrites are inaccurate, even misleading. For example, an article from Ars Technica, originally titled "Valve’s Steam Machine looks like a console, but don’t expect it to be priced like one," was transformed by the AI into "Steam Machine price revealed." This is despite the fact that Valve hadn't released any pricing details at the time.
Another concerning instance involved a PC Gamer article discussing how some Baldur's Gate 3 players were building an in-game army of child-like non-player characters. The AI's version, however, read "BG3 players exploit children," which is a significant misrepresentation of the article's actual content.
And this is the part most people miss: The AI sometimes strips away the unique angle of a story. An article from The Verge about Microsoft developers using AI was simplified to "Microsoft developers using AI," losing the specific context of the original piece.
PCMag's team was unable to activate AI-generated headlines. A Google spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that only a "subset of Discover users" are part of this "small UI experiment." Google stated that they are "testing a new design that changes the placement of existing headlines to make topic details easier to digest before they explore links from across the web.”
This isn't Google's first foray into AI-driven news summaries. They previously tested AI-generated story summaries on Discover, aiming to help readers decide which articles to explore.
