A bold vision for Galashiels' town centre transformation!
The much-needed regeneration of Galashiels continues with a local developer's acquisition of a prominent 'eyesore' hotel. This move marks a significant step towards revitalizing the town's heart, but it's not without its controversies and challenges.
The former Douglas Bridge Hotel, now over 135 years old, has been a source of concern due to the deteriorating condition of its upper floors. Thirlestane Investments, the new owners, have big plans to restore this iconic building to its former glory.
Director Matt Morrison acknowledges the building's current state, saying, "It's been an eyesore, but we're committed to investing heavily in its revival." The purchase, however, excludes the ground-floor retail units, leaving the upper floors and their 58 windows in need of a major overhaul.
But here's where it gets interesting: the planned refurbishment goes beyond aesthetics. Thirlestane Investments aims for a sensitive restoration, improving energy performance, and even considering solar panels on the roof.
"The building's age presents unique challenges," Mr. Morrison adds, "but we're proud to take on such an iconic project."
Galashiels' town centre has been undergoing a gradual transformation since the Borders Railway reopened a decade ago. Yet, several streets still struggle with vacant shops and neglected properties.
And this is the part most people miss: the sale of the former hotel is just one piece of a larger puzzle. The Scottish Borders Housing Association has also purchased adjacent properties, aiming to convert them into flats and smaller retail spaces.
So, what do you think? Is this a step towards a brighter future for Galashiels, or are there potential pitfalls we should consider? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
