A unique residence in the Hudson Valley, New York, designed by Forma, an architecture studio, showcases a cedar-clad cube-like structure that transforms based on angle and lighting. The 1,474-square-foot home, crafted by Forma's Miroslava Brooks and Daniel Markiewicz, is a weekend retreat on a 9-acre wooded property. The design aims to stand out as art while minimizing environmental impact. The house's cedar siding angles change as residents move around it, with vertical planks on the west facade and diagonal boards on the east, creating a covered patio. While most of the exterior is blackened cedar, the patio walls retain their natural, warm tone, highlighting the cedar's texture. The square floorplan is split into public and private areas, with a private suite, a smaller bedroom, and a third suite. The main room features a contemporary fireplace, blending living and dining spaces. Skylights are strategically placed for optimal daylighting. The design reflects the studio's response to real-world constraints, blending idealism, pragmatism, and design ingenuity. The project faced challenges due to the pandemic, including skyrocketing construction costs and labor shortages, leading to a nearly five-year extension.
