Chris Hemsworth's Thor Returns: What's Next for the God of Thunder? (2026)

Hold onto your Mjolnirs, Marvel fans! The God of Thunder is far from retired, with Chris Hemsworth himself confirming exciting plans for Thor's future beyond his anticipated return in Avengers: Doomsday.

It seems the thunderous reign of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set to continue! In a recent chat on the Smartless Podcast, Chris Hemsworth, the actor who has embodied the mighty Thor for years, revealed that he and Marvel Studios are already charting a course for the character's future. He candidly shared that he envisions playing the iconic Avenger "a couple more times" after his appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, slated for release on December 18th. "Yeah, it's wild," he exclaimed, hinting at a significant continuation of Thor's journey.

Hemsworth elaborated on his conversations with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, noting that the audience's expectation for "dramatic turns" with the character is something they're embracing. "Whatever we do next—we’ve got some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully be [different]," he stated, suggesting a fresh and unexpected direction for Thor.

But here's where it gets interesting... While Thor 5 is definitely on the horizon, the MCU veteran's future appearances could also encompass the monumental Avengers: Secret Wars. This upcoming sixth Avengers film is poised to be the grand finale of Phase 6 and will cap off the entire Multiverse Saga. It's a massive undertaking that will likely pave the way for new narrative directions.

Now, for a bit of a shake-up: Taika Waititi, the director behind Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, has confirmed he will not be returning for the fifth installment. In a 2025 interview, Waititi clearly stated, "I wouldn't know if that's accurate. I know that I won't be involved. I'm going to concentrate on these other films that I've signed on for." This departure certainly leaves a question mark over the directorial vision for Thor 5.

Despite a somewhat mixed reception for Thor: Love and Thunder, which grossed $760 million worldwide during Phase 4, Thor remains one of the last standing original Avengers. With the MCU timeline potentially undergoing a significant reset through Avengers: Secret Wars, Thor 5 is realistically looking at a Phase 7 debut. This gives Marvel ample time to craft a compelling new arc for the character.

And this is the part most people miss... Back in July 2025, Kevin Feige himself emphasized at a press roundtable that he believes Hemsworth is still very much in his prime to continue portraying Thor. While he didn't offer specifics about Thor 5 at the time, this endorsement from the top signals a strong commitment to the character's longevity.

As of now, Thor 5 does not have a confirmed release date, leaving fans eagerly anticipating further announcements.

What do you think? Does the idea of Thor continuing for several more films excite you, or do you believe it's time for the character to pass the torch? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below – we'd love to hear if you agree or disagree with the direction Marvel is taking!
