A life-saving Bone Marrow Transplant Centre, estimated to cost $11 million, is on the horizon for Ghana, promising a beacon of hope for leukemia patients. Peter Osei-Tutu, Vice President of the Leukaemia Foundation Project, revealed this ambitious plan during a discussion on JoyNews' AM Show, following the compelling documentary "Leukaemia: Last Chance Abroad." The aim? To bridge critical gaps in leukemia treatment and spare patients the ordeal of seeking care overseas.
The project, encompassing the center and its essential equipment, is estimated to cost approximately $11 million, which translates to about GH₵177 million. The Foundation is targeting an early next year commencement for construction, specifically aiming to break ground in February.
However, the path to realizing this vision isn't without its hurdles. Fundraising remains a significant challenge, potentially impacting the project's timeline. The Foundation hopes to complete the center within a two-year period, but this hinges on successful fundraising efforts.
The JoyNews documentary shed light on the limitations in leukemia treatment options within Ghana, highlighting the need for specialized care. As Mr. Osei-Tutu explained, the documentary exposed significant gaps in treatment, with not every aspect of care available locally. This reality underscored the rationale behind establishing a specialized treatment center. "That's why we thought it's prudent for us to set up this genetic center, where some of the things that are not being done in Ghana could be done here."
And this is the part most people miss... The proposed center offers more than just medical treatment; it offers families the invaluable opportunity to stay together during a challenging time. Patients will be able to receive treatment close to their support networks, eliminating the need for international travel.
While some treatments are available in Ghana, critical procedures like bone marrow and cell transplants are currently inaccessible. Mr. Osei-Tutu emphasized the importance of providing these services within the country, allowing families to avoid the emotional and financial strain of seeking treatment abroad.
Fundraising has proven difficult, despite support from institutions like Stanbic and Ecobank. Mr. Osei-Tutu has appealed to corporate bodies and individuals to contribute, reminding everyone that leukemia can affect anyone.
He encourages public participation, emphasizing that even a small contribution can make a difference. "Even if it’s a cedi that you put in, you’ve also contributed to saving a life."
But here's where it gets controversial... Describing leukemia as a critical disease, Mr. Osei-Tutu stressed the urgency of completing the center. His personal experience, having lost his elder brother to leukemia, fuels his dedication to the project.
He also noted a growing awareness of cancer in Ghana, with more people recognizing it as a serious health threat. Mr. Osei-Tutu commended JoyNews for raising national awareness about leukemia and the importance of addressing the challenges faced by patients.
