The Rise of an Immortal: Bernard Arnault's Induction into the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences
In a ceremony that captivated Paris, Bernard Arnault, the visionary chairman and CEO of LVMH, was inducted into the prestigious Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. This event, attended by an elite gathering of French society, marked a significant milestone in Arnault's remarkable journey.
The ceremony, held under the grand dome of the Institut de France, brought together an impressive array of guests, including industry leaders, designers, and even the First Lady of France, Brigitte Macron. LVMH's creative talent was also well-represented, with designers such as Jonathan Anderson, Pharrell Williams, and Maria Grazia Chiuri in attendance.

Arnault's induction into the Academy, an institution that bestows its lifetime members with the symbolic title of 'Immortals,' comes at a time when speculation about his succession plans is at an all-time high. Despite this, Arnault, who has publicly stated his desire to lead his group until the age of 85, demonstrated a unified front as his five children sat together, while his wife, Hélène Mercier-Arnault, took her place at the front, next to Macron.
The nearly two-hour ceremony was a spectacle, featuring speeches and a captivating performance by Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich. At its conclusion, Arnault, dressed in an embroidered uniform designed by Anderson for Dior, was presented with a ceremonial sword, a unique creation by the late architect Frank Gehry. The sword, with its handle shaped like a flying fish and engraved with Arnault's initials, was a testament to their collaborative projects, most notably the iconic Fondation Louis Vuitton building near Paris.
In his speech, Arnault chose to pay tribute to Denis Kessler, the late CEO of French reinsurer Scor and his predecessor in the academy's political economy, statistics, and finance section. He shared insights into their shared entrepreneurial spirit, recalling their first trip to the U.S. in 1969, where they were inspired by the anti-war and civil rights movements, and the counterculture of the Beat Generation. Arnault's words resonated with the audience, as he described the U.S. as a 'land of scale and freedom' that opened their eyes to endless possibilities.
"On that flight home, we realized that everything was within our reach, provided we had the energy, enthusiasm, and determination we witnessed across the Atlantic," Arnault said.
Anderson, the designer behind Arnault's uniform, wanted to capture his forward-thinking approach. The almost abstract embroidery of traditional olive leaves on the uniform stood out, reflecting Arnault's revolutionary mindset. Anderson described him as "one of the best examples of that today - incredibly modern in that way."
Jean-Claude Trichet, former president of the European Central Bank, highlighted Arnault's career trajectory, from his early days at the family-owned industrial construction company to his acquisition of the bankrupt Boussac Saint-Frères, which owned Christian Dior. Arnault's appointment at the helm of LVMH in 1989 marked the beginning of a luxury empire, now boasting 75 brands, including Louis Vuitton, Moët & Chandon, and Tiffany & Co.
Trichet described Arnault as "a man in a hurry who knows where he's going."
Former finance minister Bruno Le Maire, who inaugurated Louis Vuitton's leather goods workshops in central France, analyzed the symbolism of Arnault's ceremonial sword, created by LVMH's jeweler Chaumet. The sword, adorned with a blue orb and lily of the valley, the signature flower of Christian Dior, represented determination, creativity, and perhaps even tenderness, according to Le Maire. He added, "We are a nation of fashion and luxury, and we should take pride in that."
Le Maire also noted that the initials of Arnault's five children, alongside matching gemstones, were engraved on the sword's handle, a reference to Christian Dior's lucky charm. He praised Arnault's family ties, saying, "No engraving runs as deep as the bonds you have formed with them."
The blade itself bore a quote from Albert Einstein: "Imagination is more important than knowledge." Sidney Toledano, special adviser to Arnault and a long-serving LVMH executive, believed this quote perfectly encapsulated Arnault's spirit and mindset.
Toledano described the event as "a historic moment," expressing pride in his long-standing collaboration with Arnault and the recognition of his professional and personal qualities. Other LVMH executives, architects, gallerists, chefs, and ambassadors were also in attendance, adding to the prestige of the occasion.
Maria Grazia Chiuri, who has led Dior's womenswear collections for nine years before becoming Fendi's chief creative officer, was impressed by the ceremony's pageantry and its role in cultural transmission. She acknowledged Arnault's unique ability to combine the cultural and entrepreneurial dimensions, preserving the DNA of French and foreign brands while carrying them forward.
As the ceremony concluded, guests moved to a post-event cocktail, where Chiuri posed for a commemorative photo with Arnault, beaming in his full regalia. This induction into the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences solidifies Arnault's legacy as one of France's top business minds, and his impact on the luxury industry is undeniable.
